Over this past week, there have been several important developments concerning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
On the 24th of June 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for two individuals, Mr Sergei Kuzhugetovich Shoigu and Mr Valery Vasilyevich Gerasimov. Both individuals are allegedly responsible for the war crime of directing attacks at civilian objects, the war crime of causing excessive incidental harm to civilians or damage to civilian objects, and the crime against humanity of inhumane acts under article 7(1)(k) of the Rome Statute.
On the 25th of June 2024, the European Court of Human Rights issued a judgement in the case brought by Ukraine against Russia. The case concerns human rights violations in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. The European Court of Human Rights has found Russia guilty of rights violations. However, the impact of this decision is to be limited, as Russia does not recognise the judgements of the Court.
Going forward, Ukraine Legal Network will continue to monitor and provide updates on developments in justice and accountability for the crimes committed due to Russian aggression in Ukraine.
