On 11 December, the Ukraine Legal Network held a meeting with Ukrainian residents at De Riekerhof in Amsterdam. The event brought together approximately 30 participants to address critical questions about compensation for losses caused by the war, the recovery of lost documents, and navigating the complex process of proving damages.

This meeting was especially significant for individuals who have been displaced from occupied territories. Many of the attendees are facing profound challenges, including the loss of their homes, the separation of their families, and an uncertain future. The session therefore aimed to provide them with much-needed clarity on their rights and the available mechanisms to seek justice through the Register of Damage for Ukraine.

Main goals of that meeting were:

to raise awareness of people about Register of Damage for Ukraine;

  • to present Ukraine Legal Network;
  • to measure the demand on legal assistance among Ukrainians in the Netherlands;
  • to collect answers for the Barometer research.

Key Takeaways

1. Legal guidance remains essential. Participants voiced the need for professional support to navigate compensation claims, resolve housing issues, and recover vital documents.

2. Widespread misconceptions persist. Many believe that compensation is only available for destroyed homes. This misunderstanding prevents eligible individuals from seeking the support they are entitled to.

3. Skepticism toward compensation mechanisms. Some participants expressed doubts about whether the systems in place would deliver tangible results.
