“Life is not on pause. If we don’t stand up for our rights — no one else will” — Olesia Zaiets

Lawyer Olesia Zaiets, Project Officer at Ukraine Legal Network, which is a project of The Nuhanovic Foundation, gave an interview to Radio Ukraine the Netherlands, where she spoke about the compensation mechanisms available to Ukrainians affected by Russia’s war.

The interview offers clear and accessible explanations about the Register of Damage — an international mechanism launched to document and assess losses suffered as a result of Russian aggression. Olesia stresses that now is the time to act: Ukrainians can already submit applications for certain types of damage, and registering losses early is essential to ensure they are recognised and considered for future compensation.

“The process won’t happen overnight, but documenting your losses now is essential for future legal steps,” Zaiets says. Ukraine Legal Network provides free legal support to Ukrainians in the Netherlands, helping them prepare and submit applications, both online and during in-person consultations.

In the interview, she also talks about how her team works directly with communities, responds to requests from shelters and municipalities, and raises awareness among displaced Ukrainians who may not know these legal avenues exist.
