Three-Day Training on Compensation for Survivors of Aggression in Ukraine, International Mechanisms and Other Justice Avenues

Ukraine Legal Network is hosting a three-day capacity building training, organised in cooperation with Redress. The training aims to educate Ukrainian lawyers on how to effectively assist victims, navigate compensation mechanisms, and understand the Register of Damages for Ukraine, including the process of submitting claims.

Event Dates: November 6 – 8, 2024
Locations: Amsterdam / The Hague

Participants will receive specialised training focused on supporting victims of war-related harm, with an emphasis on helping them submit claims to the Register of Damage for Ukraine.

 

Objectives of the training:

  • Develop a strong international network of pro bono lawyers specialising in the Register of Damage.
  • Explore the effectiveness of the compensation mechanism available to victims of Russian aggression in Ukraine.
  • Establish a free helpline that offers support in Ukrainian, providing step-by-step guidance on how to register damages and file claims.
  • Explore avenues for reparations and justice for victims and survivors.

 

Who Should Attend?
The event will host Ukrainian lawyers based in Ukraine, as well as in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the UK.

 

Main topics of the program:

  • The Register of Damage for Ukraine (the Register), established by the Council of Europe;
  • Repurposing of frozen assets as resources of compensations for victims of international war crimes;
  • Universal jurisdiction (UJ) before national courts in several European countries;
  • International and regional avenues for reparations for victims of war crimes in Ukraine, including International Criminal Court and European Court of Human Rights.

 

Other Activities:

  • Participants will get opportunities to engage in Q&A sessions, interactive simulations to provide insights into handling survivors’ cases, and case studies.
  • The event will include round table discussions that delve into the issues and challenges of applying to National War Compensation Schemes in Ukraine.
  • Participants will get to witness a hearing of the Said Case (CAR) at the ICC hearing.
  • The training sessions will be concluded by a networking reception, offering participants the opportunity to engage with experts and media professionals.
